Hey, I’m Michael Culp and today, I’m going to give you 43 tips to grow your blog. If you don’t have one yet, check out my step-by-step guide on how to start a blog.

Are you looking for ways to grow your blog? If so, you’re in luck! In this post, we will discuss 43 different tips that will help you do just that.

Growing a blog can be challenging, but it’s definitely worth it in the end. We’ll cover a variety of topics, including how to increase traffic, how to improve your SEO, how to create better content, and how to build an audience.

So whether you’re a new blogger or you’ve been blogging for years, these tips will help you take your blog to the next level!

Why should you grow your blog? Because if you don’t, you’re leaving money at the table. Let’s look at some stats…

According to Hubspot, Google process, approximately 63,000 search queries every second, translating to 5.6 billion searches per day and approximately 2 trillion global searches per year.

Now that you know how big the opportunity is, let’s dive into the tips.

1 – Step up your design

When someone lands on your blog for the first time, they judge your credibility on design first and your content second.

If you want people to take your blog seriously, you need to have a professional design. This doesn’t mean that you need a fancy design or to hire a graphic designer.

As long as it looks professional, you’re good. A minimalist design is okay. The content you publish will ultimately make or break your blog’s success.

The goal of a good design is to show that you’re a trustworthy brand/website. Elementor is a great plugin that can help you easily design professional looking websites.

2 – Create Great Content

The quality of your content is what will make people stay on your website. It’s very difficult to teach you how to write great content in just a subsection of an article, but I’ll give you some guidelines to make your content stand out haha

Keep in mind that you need to write content for 2 types of people. The one who is going to actually read your content and for the scanners, who will just scan to the section they need and read just a tiny part of the article.

For the scanners, make sure to divide your content into a lot of different subsections, with headings and subheadings. It’s also important to write in short sentences, with no more than 3 sentences per paragraph.

For the readers, you do need to have high-quality information all the way. For that, make sure to do quality research. The best places to research are Google itself and Youtube.

Read similar articles and watch videos on the topic that you want to write about, then you’re going to be well informed to write an authentic piece of content with your own take and own experiences. Make sure that your sources are credible.

3 – Optimize your posts for search

To grow a blog, we need to capitalize on all the searches that occur on Google. For that, we need to make sure that the strategic parts of our article are optimized.

You need to add keywords in your post title and subheadings, keep your URL short and with keywords, and make sure that the content is long and unique.

A pro tip here is to take advantage of all the subheadings to put long-tail keywords that are less competitive and easy to rank for.

4 – Build backlinks

Getting backlinks to your content is just as important or even more important than your content. Backlinks are a sign of trust in google’s eye. To rank for keywords you need links pointing to your website that show that you are an authoritative site for Google.

Think of links as the foundation of your blog. Anybody can write and update their content, but not everybody can get links.

You need to work actively to build links, you need to build partnerships. That means sending outreach emails, talking to other bloggers, and actively participating in link building.

It will be much more important for your blog in the long haul than just writing content.

A great way to build links is to create a post that is so insanely valuable that helps put your blog on the map. For that, you can leverage the Skyscraper technique.

Whatever space you are in, your competition is already creating content and they are getting links. You can use Ahrefs to see what is popular and what kind of articles are driving them the most links so you can also create similar ones.

Whatever your competition writes, you want to write a piece of content on that topic that is 5, 10x more detailed, so other people will think it’s amazing and will consider linking to it.

You can go even further here and email all the other blogs that are linking to your competition, to show your new article and ask for a backlink as well.

5 – Guest post on other blogs

Guest post is a link-building technique that will allow you to show your talent to other blogs’ audiences. It’s when you publish a piece of content on other people’s blogs.

The cool thing is that besides getting links to your website if the readers like what they read, they will be drawn to your blog. This is a great way to leapfrog the marketing process haha

A great tip here is to start small and grow from there. Start writing for small sites in your niche and climb up the ladder slowly. Make sure to write great content so that when it gets published, you can show it to your new prospects.

The easiest way to find guest posting opportunities is to type on google:

“your topic” + guest posting

Example: “camping” + guest posting.

6 – Take advantage of HARO

HARO is a service that connects you with journalists who need sources for their articles.

You can sign up as a source and 3 times a day, Monday through Friday, they will send you an email with the questions. If you have something valuable to say, then you can reply to that email and if they use your answer, they will link back to your website.

It’s a great way to get high-quality links because it comes from authority sites since it’s usually news websites that are looking for sources. And it doesn’t take much time out of your day, just check your email every day and see if any opportunities make sense for you.

7 – Keyword research

You need to do keyword research to write about things that people are looking for. There are only 2 types of keywords that you need to write about.

Informational keywords and commercial keywords.

For informational keywords you’ll write how-to’s articles, you’re going to write articles answering questions, for example: how to start a blog, how to grow a blog…

Commercial keywords you’ll write product review articles, and articles showing the best products for specific situations. Example: best running shoes, best running shoes for men, best-running shoes for wide feet, Nike Run Swift 2 Review.

There are a lot of different research tools you can use for content ideas. Here are some: answer the public, quora, Reddit, Buzzsumo, Ahrefs, and a lot of others.

8 – Keep a content calendar

Consistency is a critical factor to success in any business and in blogging it isn’t different. Based on the keyword research you did, you need to plan your content calendar.

How many articles will you publish per week? 1? 3? 5?

There are no hard rules here, you can do it in the way that works best for you. Of course the more effort you put in, the more results you’ll get, but if you don’t have the time to publish a lot of articles, don’t worry, just get started.

You can build your content calendar for 3 months, 6 months, and even a year.

9 – Build Internal Links

Internal Linking is great for getting more results from your backlinks campaigns and to make users spend more time on your website.

The concept when it comes to internal linking is siloing. A silo is a structure of your website, where certain pages will link to each other based on relevancy.

A good framework to make it easy to understand is to think of your website as a pyramid, with your homepage on top. Then, internal links cascade downwards and outwards to various categories and subcategories.

10 – Build your email list

If you don’t collect emails, you’ll not get people to come back to your site. Building your email list is one of the most important things you can do to grow your blog. Once you have an engaged email list, anything is possible.

Need to sell a new product? You have a list of people ready to hear about it. Want to start a Youtube channel? You can get a lot of new subscribers just by sending an email.

Email is HUGE. The question is: how do you actually build a list?

You need to start by creating a lead magnet. A lead magnet can be anything that encourages someone to subscribe to your list, a cheat sheet, a guide, a video training, a quiz…

When you get the lead magnet done, you need to promote it through your content and your website. Whenever you have an opportunity, make a call to action asking people to subscribe to your email list.

To store the email addresses you’re getting, you’ll need email marketing software. There are a lot of good options in the market such as Mailchimp, Aweber, Getresponse, there are many options.

11 – Reply to comments

Now that you’re starting to get some traction, people will start to leave comments on your posts. You need to reply to every single comment that comes in. Having your community on your blog is super important.

An active community is a huge part of growing a blog. That community only is going to get built up if you reply to the comments.

12 – Make promotion part of your blogging process

Most people publish a post, share it on social media, and wait for it to go viral…

It doesn’t work. You need to put promotion first. Content promotion is equally important, maybe even more important.

To promote your content you can outreach to other people and ask them to share, publish guest posts with a link to your new content, and share it with your email subscribers…

13 – Invest money in ads

The last tip to grow your blog is through paid advertising. If you have the money, paid advertising is beautiful because it’s fast and measurable. With paid marketing, you can create a lead magnet in the morning, put up an ad in the afternoon, and wake up with a lot of new email subscribers the next morning.

Paid ads are great to help you grow quickly.

There are a few different ways to build an editorial calendar. You can use a tool like CoSchedule, which gives you a drag-and-drop interface to plan your content. Or you can use Google Calendar, which is free and easy to use.
