What is affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing is when you make money selling other people’s products or services. You gain a commission for every sale you refer.

It’s one of the easiest ways to make money online. You can find a product you like, promote it to people, and earn a commission on every sale you make.

It’s great for beginners, as you don’t need to take care of providing customer support or providing the service/product. Your only job is to bring the traffic, you only need to focus on one part of the equation.

And it’s also great for more experienced marketers and entrepreneurs, as it’s a great opportunity to build new streams of passive income.

Usually, in affiliate marketing, there are 4 main parts involved: the seller, the affiliate, the network, and the consumer.

The seller

The seller is the person/brand that is providing the service or the product. It’s the part that creates the product.

The seller can be an individual person or even a Fortune 500 company.

Affiliate marketing is a great opportunity not only for the affiliate but also for the seller. In this business model, the seller doesn’t need to worry about marketing and about selling the product.

For example, if you don’t know anything about marketing and sales and also don’t want to learn it, you can write an e-book or record an informational course and recruit affiliates to sell your products for you.

The Affiliate

This part is responsible for the marketing and sales part of the process. It can be an influencer, a blog owner, a Youtube Channel, me, you…

The affiliate can promote one or multiple products to their audience. The affiliate aims to persuade and convince their audience that the product is worth buying it.

When the consumer buys the product that the affiliate is promoting, the affiliate makes a commission.

Usually, the affiliates work in specific niches related to theirs and their audience interests such as personal development, weight loss, investing, hobbies, etc.

The screenshot below is from one of the biggest affiliate websites out there, Wirecutter, owned by the New York Times. They make reviews recommending a lot of different categories of products. The website was founded by Brian Lam in 2011 and purchased by The New York Times Company in 2016 for about $30 million.

When you are getting started you’ll want to focus on only one niche/category, but as you start to grow, you can start to expand to new streams of products.

The Network

The Network is the mediator between the seller and the affiliate. It can be seen as a catalog with lots of different products where the affiliate can choose from.

The network is responsible for the payments and delivery of the product.

Not every company is part of an Affiliate Network, some have their own affiliate programs.

The Consumer

The consumer is the one who keeps the system alive.

The affiliates share the product with the consumer on social media, blog posts, Youtube videos and it’s not uncommon for consumers to not know that they are buying the product via an affiliate link.

Some affiliates choose to be transparent about it and mention that they are earning a commission while others don’t.

Some networks or sellers have rules about the affiliate being transparent, but most of the time it’s the affiliate who chooses it.

It’s worth mentioning that buying via an affiliate link will change nothing to the consumer. The price will be the same and the product will come as normal.

Affiliate Marketing Benefits

Before we dive into how you can actually start as an affiliate marketer, let me show you all of the benefits of this business model.

1. Passive income.

Affiliate Marketing provides you with the opportunity to make money as you sleep.

You do need to put the work upfront by publishing content, but once this content is published, you’ll continue to see money coming. The piece of content that you published will continue to make sales in the next days, months, and even years to come.

After the system is set up, you’ll need to put in just a little bit of work to maintain the good results you’re already getting.

On top of that, you can choose affiliate programs that pay recurring commissions. The recurring revenue model guarantees that you don’t have to land new customers for every commission. You can earn long-term revenue by getting multiple commissions from a single referral.

2. No customer support.

The beauty of affiliate marketing is that you don’t need to worry about the customer once the sale is made. This part will be the seller’s job.

The seller is the one who has to deal with the customer and guarantee that he is satisfied. Your only job is to bring the traffic.

Also, you don’t need to provide the service or the product.

3. Work from home.

You don’t need to go to the office and be worried about your commute and being stuck in traffic. You’ll be able to work from the comfort of your home.

4. Cost-effective.

Most aspiring entrepreneurs don’t have much money to start their own business. However, affiliate marketing can be done at a very low cost.

You can do it through a Youtube channel where you don’t have any fee or you can do it via a blog or website, where you’ll need some tools, but the cost is very minimal.

It’s a very good option for those who want to start a business and don’t have money to invest.

5. Convenient and flexible.

One of the biggest advantages of affiliate marketing is that you have much more freedom than an employee. With Affiliate Marketing you’re running your own business, you’re the boss, you get to decide what are your goals and how many hours you want to work.

You’ll have a bit of hard work, in the beginning, to set up the systems and everything, but once all of that is set, it’s your choice if you want to scale further and make even more money or if you want to relax and just enjoy what you have built.

You’ll be free from all the strings that come from working in a 9-5 job.

6. Performance-Based rewards.

There is nothing worse than working your ass off and not getting compensated accordingly. The beauty of affiliate marketing is that it’s a business model purely based on performance.

You get what you put in. This is an extremely good opportunity to grow. If you have an above-average work ethic, very soon you’ll be overtaking everyone around you.

This relates a lot to the passive income part. The cool thing is that you can work harder in the beginning to achieve faster results and once the bulk of the work is done, you can relax and enjoy the results.

7. Unlimited Opportunities with SEO

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization which are strategies designed to optimize websites, blogs, and web pages to achieve good rankings in the search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

According to Hubspot, it’s estimated that Google processes approximately 63,000 search queries every second, translating to 5.6 billion searches per day and approximately 2 trillion global searches per year.

This is a very good opportunity and if you learn SEO properly, you can get a piece of the cake too.

Different types of affiliate marketing

Usually, in affiliate marketing, sellers can offer three different types of commisions payments, pay per sale, pay per click, and pay per lead.

Pay per Sale

This is the most common way you’ll see. Here, the seller pays the affiliate a percentage of the product price every time a sale is made. The percentage that the affiliate will receive varies greatly from program to program, it can be as low as 3%, and as high as 75%.

The affiliate only receives the commission if the consumer buys.

Pay per Click (PPC)

With PPC the affiliate receives a commission for every click and the price per click is fixed beforehand.

The affiliate will place an ad in his blog, social media, email marketing, or other channel and if the consumer clicks on it, the affiliate receives a commission.

Pay per Lead

In the PPC program, the consumer just needs to click on the link, on the other hand, in the pay-per-lead programs, the consumer needs to click on the link and become a lead. In a sales context, a lead refers to contact with potential customers.

The consumer will become a lead by completing the desired action such as filling out a contact form, signing up for a trial of a product, subscribing to a newsletter, or downloading some file for example.

What Channels can be used?

In this section, I’ll show you all the different channels you can use to build your affiliate marketing business.

Site or blog

A site or a blog is one of the main channels affiliate marketers choose to promote their products.

If you like to write, this is a simple way to start your online business. You can build a blog around any topic you want.

For example, if you like outdoors and camping, you can start producing content around that and you can leave links to products that relate to your content such as tents, boots, sleeping bags, and other camping supplies.

A good way to build your content is to write product reviews. Your goal will be to write a comprehensive review that promotes the brand in a compelling way. But of course, you do need to be honest and only recommend products that you know to be good.

Usually, people who are starting out just publish random content, without any strategy, which may or may not work.

To become successful with your blog you need to learn about SEO and keyword intent.

SEO stands for search engine optimization and is what will make you rank higher on Google, therefore reaching a bigger number of people and getting more traffic.

The goal of Keyword intent is to produce the right type of content for each phase of the sales cycle your buyer is in. Therefore increasing your conversion rate, which means more money.

Social Media

Also known as influencer marketing, this type of marketing channel is very famous these days. Affiliate marketing has become one of many social media trends.

An influencer is someone who holds the power to impact the purchase decision of a large segment of the population. It’s very common to see them advertising for brands.

If you like social media and/or have a big following you can benefit from affiliate marketing. You can do it from the platform you want.

Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest are all great options.

It’s also important to mention that you need to promote products that relate to the types of posts you make on your social media account.

YouTube

Video content is becoming more and more prevalent. For affiliate marketers, Youtube is very promising.

Youtube has over one billion hours watched a day by over 2 billion viewers. Pretty good opportunity, right?

Other stats:

  • 79% of consumers prefer to watch a video to know about a product rather than reading a text.
  • 84% of consumers were convinced to make a purchase after watching a video from a brand.
  • 91% of consumers watched a video to know more about a product or a service.

Ok, people spend an insane amount of hours watching videos and videos are an effective way to convert visitors into buyers.

But how do you make a profit from Youtube?

Basically, Youtube works very similarly to blogs and websites. You make a compelling video reviewing a product and put your affiliate link in the description of the video.

Email Marketing

Most people think that email marketing is dead but the stats show otherwise:

According to Hubspot, email generated $42 for every $1 spent, which is an outstanding 4,200% return on investment, making it one of the most effective options available.

Not bad if you ask my opinion haha

Email also works very similarly to the other content platforms. You can build a newsletter where you send content to your audience X times a week, put an affiliate link on it, and make a profit.

It’s also worth mentioning that you need to send content that your audience wants to read, you need to offer value to them, otherwise, you’ll fail to make sales.

People buy from who they know, like, and trust.

Relying solely on new people to discover your site can be a long process. Paid advertising is an effective way to accelerate the process and make more people aware of you.

Paid ads are a way to bring real visitors to your offer by advertising on social media, using banners, or leveraging pay-per-click (PPC) ads. You can choose if you want to bring the traffic to your website or to a landing page.

  • Pay-per-Click (PPC) advertising: when you use PPC you only pay when somebody actually clicks through to your site or landing page. These ads most commonly appear in search results such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo.
  • Link and Banner Advertisements: these are the most basic types of advertisements online. Banner ads can be used almost anywhere: websites, social media, and even emails.
  • Social Media Advertisement: the best thing about advertising on social media is that you can target your message to your ideal audience. With specific keywords, hobbies, and interests, you can direct your ads to those who are most likely to be interested.

To do Affiliate Marketing via paid advertising you’ll need to build a sales funnel, for that, you’ll need funnel builder software. There are a lot of great options in the market such as Clickfunnels and Groovefunnels. Click here to check out the comparison I dit between Clickfunnels and Groovefunnels.

The Super Affiliate System is a great course that will teach you how to do affiliate marketing via paid advertising.

Blogging vs Youtube videos Key Differences

  • You own your blog, not Youtube.
  • It’s faster to get SEO traffic to a Youtube channel than a blog.
  • SEO competition on Google is often more than on Youtube.
  • Youtube is free, blogs require at least domain and hosting.
  • It’s more difficult to make a video than to write a blog post.

In general, you need to look at your niche. Your target audience prefers to watch a video or read articles?

Depending on your situation one of the options will be better than the other, but usually, any of them will work. You can also do both.

What is the best affiliate network?

To help you, I’ll show you 3 main affiliate platforms and networks. Together, they will give you access to tens of thousands of different products.

Whether you want to promote physical or digital products, big or small brands, you’ll find something that fits your interests.

Also, it’s worth mentioning that if you can’t find the brand you want to partner with within the networks, chances are high that this brand has a private affiliate program. Usually, you can join their program by contacting them or filling up a form on their website.

ShareASale

ShareASale is one of the most popular affiliate networks out there.

In their platform, you’ll have to apply to merchants and be approved by each merchant. Overall, ShareASale is a great option for both digital and physical products.

For digital products you’ll find lots of different WordPress themes, plugins, hosting providers, etc.

For physical products, you’ll find big and small merchants. For example, some of the brands are Rebook, Sun Basket, Cricut, Allbirds, and others.

Chances are high that you’ll find something that interests you. In ShareASale, the average commission rate depends on the specific merchant you sign up with.

Amazon Associates

If you want to promote physical products, Amazon Associates can be a good option. With their program, you can earn a commission on pretty much anything sold at Amazon.com.

One cool feature that they have is that you’ll earn a commission on everything new that someone you refer purchases, even if it’s not the product you linked to. This is important because Amazon is one of the best companies in the world at upselling people.

For example, if you link to a $20 dollar ebook but that person ends up buying a $200 Kindle, you still get the commission.

The downside of Amazon is that commissions are pretty low, usually around 1 – 10%, depending on the category.

ClickBank

ClickBank is one of the most famous affiliate networks for digital products, though it offers physical products as well.

ClickBank has more small merchants than big and well-known brands. You’ll find a lot of merchants selling ebooks, online courses, or membership sites.

As they have a lot of small merchants, there are a lot of good and bad products, so you’ll need to do your homework and research a bit about the product you’re promoting.

The commission rate depends on the merchant you sign up with, but they are usually pretty high. It’s not uncommon to find 50% commission rates and even more.

Step-by-Step to start as an affiliate

Now, let’s get into the step-by-step process you can start to implement today, to make money online as an affiliate marketer.

1 – Find your niche

Finding a profitable niche is your first priority.

A common mistake people make when starting in business is to think that they need to find a little-known market, or that profitable niches will be ones that other marketers are not currently involved with.

As an aspiring entrepreneur, chances are pretty low that you’ll find a niche that other affiliates have overlooked. Usually, these types of niches don’t have competition because the demand is low, so customers are few and the number of products to promote is limited.

Don’t be afraid to go to mainstream niches. These niches currently have competition, high demand, proven longevity, plenty of reachable customers, lots of different products, social media groups, and forums.

Here is a simple step-by-step process for you to choose a niche.

  1. Consider your own interests.
  2. Identify potential monetization options within the niche.
  3. Assess the competition.
  4. Assess the search volume for the niche.

2 – Choose your channel

There’s nothing much to say here. Want to promote via paid advertising? Build a blog? Youtube channel? Social Media? Email?

Choose the channel that better fits your personality and goals, and start building it. You can also choose more than one channel, it’s totally fine.

3 – Sign up for the affiliate network and Choose the Right Products

Now that you have chosen your niche and your channel, it’s time to sign up for the affiliate network.

In the previous topics, I mentioned some options such as Amazon Associates, ShareASale, and ClickBank.

But you don’t need to get stuck in these 3 options, you can research other affiliate networks and also research companies that offer private affiliate programs.

You also need to choose the affiliate network based on the type of product you want to promote. Want to promote physical or digital products?

The products you are promoting must be related to your niche, otherwise, you’ll fail to convert visitors into buyers.

Also, try to test the product beforehand, not only to see the quality but to write more precise reviews.

4 – Educate your audience about the product you are selling

The goal of producing content is to deliver true value to your audience. The “education” through content marketing can take many forms, practical (how-tos and tutorials), theoretical (deep dives into specific subjects), or brand-specific (product information and features).

By producing content you are creating an immersive environment for potential customers to discover how the product you’re promoting will solve their problems or realize their desires. By applying this strategy, you can drive clients to buy decisions.

A pragmatic tip is to show with your content the functionalities, benefits, and how to use that specific product.

Keep in mind that you need to convince the visitor to take some action, it can be buying a product, clicking a link, or filling up a form.

5 – Add Affiliate Links To Your content

Now that you wrote your content, you need to insert your affiliate links, and you need to do this strategically.

The way you insert affiliate links in your content will depend on the goal of each article. For example, it doesn’t make any sense to insert 5 different affiliate links in a single product review.

But if you’re writing an article called “Top 10 website hostings”, it does make sense to insert multiple affiliate links to increase your chances to make a sale.

The affiliate links you’ll get when you sign up for the affiliate program.

6 – Turn Your Visitors Into Affiliate Customers

Regarding increasing profits, the first thing that comes to mind is to increase your traffic, right?

Yes, that is right. But it’s only the first and obvious way.

You don’t need to 10x your traffic to 10x your profits. You can do it through conversion rate optimization (CRO).

CRO is the practice of increasing the percentage of users who perform a desired action on your website. Desired actions can be a sale, signing up for a service, filling up a form, or clicking on a link.

Let’s say you’re promoting a product on your site that pays $100 dollars as affiliate commission for every sale you make.

If your average CRO is 1%, you’ll make $100 dollars for every 100 visitors you get to your site. If you improve your CRO to 3%, you’ll start to make $300 for every 100 visitors you get to your site.

Now you understand the power of CRO. So, to become better at it you need to understand what drives, stops, and persuades your users, so you can give them the best experience possible.

You can learn this, through copywriting which is an entire field dedicated to the drivers that persuade people.

17 Tips to help you become a successful affiliate marketer

Now that you have your affiliate business up and running, let me give you a list of tips to make sure that you become successful.

1 – Develop a rapport

Building rapport with customers is all about creating trust and is the fundamental base of a sincere relationship. You can build rapport by speaking directly to your customer’s needs, dreams, and pain points.

Rapport helps create a lasting connection with your customers where they learn to trust you and your brand.

You also need to establish yourself as an expert in your field. You can do this by cultivating an audience that has very specific interests and promoting products only from one field, instead of promoting a mixture of unrelated products.

2 – Make it personal

Only pick trustworthy products, so you don’t burn the trust you have with your audience. If you recommend products that you know to be good and that you believe in, you’ll not have problems with conversion rate and you’ll maintain your integrity, which not many people have these days.

3 – Start reviewing products and services

Affiliate-written product reviews are in depth-articles that highlight the pros and cons of industry products. They provide great value to your readers and boost your income as they lead the customer naturally to the sale.

In these reviews, tell your reader why they would benefit from purchasing the product you are promoting or why they shouldn’t buy some product and buy the product you’re promoting instead.

You can do product reviews for every product, there’s no limit. You can review ebooks, informational courses, physical products, software, and a lot more.

4 – Use several sources

You don’t need to use only one traffic source. If you have the time and the resources, the best option is to use all traffic sources available.

But as a rule of thumb, you can start with a blog or a Youtube channel, once you start to make money, you can also start doing paid advertising, and once you start to get a lot of traffic you can start building an email list.

It’s also worth mentioning that I don’t recommend that you focus on more than one traffic source if you’re a beginner. If you’re a beginner I recommend that you pick one to get started and once you master that strategy and start to see results, you can move on to the next and continue to learn and grow.

5 – Choose campaigns with care

No matter how skilled marketer you are, your results are tied to how good the product you are promoting is. So make sure to research the product and the seller’s reputation. The trust you have with your audience takes a lot of time to build, don’t burn it promoting bad products.

It’s also worth learning a bit about the niche, so you can see how the demand for the product is. Usually, anything inside the main niches Health, Wealth, and Relationships are evergreen.

6 – Stay current with trends

As affiliate marketing has a low entry barrier, there is a lot of competition which means that you need to be up to date with everything that is happening, so you remain competitive.

Marketing is all about staying ahead of your competitors and keeping up with trends, so you can best serve your consumers. That’s especially true online, where everything changes at such a rapid pace.

Here are some tips to stay current with trends:

  • Look at Google trends.
  • Look at Twitter hashtags.
  • Watch videos about digital marketing trends.
  • Listen to podcasts.
  • Check out what your competitors are doing.
  • Attend conferences.

7 – Be Careful With Amazon

Amazon has both some incredible opportunities as well as negative sides. In this topic, I want to mention a few of the negatives. The goal is not to discourage you to go for Amazon, it’s just to make you aware of it.

Amazon is well known for drastically diminishing the commission’s rate out of the blue. In April 2021 some affiliate commission on some products went from 3-8% per sale to 1-3% per sale for many product categories.

Amazon’s cookie is only valid for 24 hours from the time a user first clicks the link. The other affiliate programs usually have a 90-day cookie after the initial click of your affiliate link.

Finally, Amazon has a very vague affiliate policy which causes affiliates to get banned or suspended sometimes.

8 – Get Traffic Before Sales

Most people start with the focus on sales, which is wrong. Let me make one thing clear, in affiliate marketing, if you don’t have traffic, you don’t have a business. Again:

No traffic = no business.

Another reason is that when you’re going to apply to an affiliate program, most of them will require that you get some traffic first before you get approved.

So, have money in mind but focus on traffic. Once you start getting traffic, you can easily add affiliate links to your blog posts, Youtube videos, Social media posts, etc.

9 – Master SEO

As I said before, you have unlimited opportunities with SEO. So, if you develop good SEO skills, success is practically certain.

Here are the important topics you need to learn to become good at SEO:

  • Researching Keywords, their volume, and competition.
  • Producing high-quality content. Always remember: content is king.
  • Put your keyword in the right places (URL, subheadings (H1, H2…), description, video file name)
  • Build backlinks for your blog.

10 – Set Up Email Alerts When A Sale Is Made

This is very important to encourage you and keep you motivated. Just imagine how awesome is this as a regular part of your life…

You are hanging out with your friends or boyfriend/girlfriend and you receive a notification saying that you just made some money?

Or… You just wake up, look at your phone, and see that you made 4 new sales when you were sleeping.

It’s very empowering.

You can set this up in the settings of your email service.

11 – Avoid Google Penalties

A Google penalty will make rankings for target keywords drop dramatically or your website will no longer be listed in the search results at all. In simple words, your target audience will no longer be able to find you.

Here are some tips to avoid penalties:

  • Follow Google’s guidelines for affiliate marketing
  • Avoid thin pages that don’t offer value to the readers
  • Don’t overuse affiliate links
  • Write an affiliate disclaimer

12 – Use An Affiliate Disclaimer

There are two main reasons that disclaimers are necessary:

  • They ensure fair business practices.
  • They provide transparency to your site readers.

Here’s an example of an affiliate disclaimer:

“As an Amazon Associates, I earn from qualifying purchases”.

13 – Promote Black Friday Deals

According to the National Retail Federation, holiday spending in November and December 2020 exceeded $789 billion in the US only. This appears as a big potential revenue for a business of any size. It’s not uncommon for companies to make 3x of their normal sales just in the black Friday week.

A very effective way to drive sales on Black Friday is using email. Having an email list you can run a lot of different campaigns, you can offer discounts, free shipping, gifts, bonuses.

14 – Constantly test and optimize your conversion rates.

As you start to get traffic, you should strive to optimize your conversion rates. This is a very enjoyable activity because results appear right away, the results are instant. And you have the opportunity to double and even triple the money you are currently making.

You can improve your conversions rates by running A/B tests. A/B test is an experiment for determining which of different variations performs better by presenting each version to users at random and analyzing the results.

You need to make this type of test to see how effective your changes are. Let’s suppose that you want to change your call to action (CTA), to see if it will improve the conversion rate.

On one page you’ll keep the original CTA, on the other page you’ll put in the new CTA. The two pages will be shown randomly to your visitors, and after a large sample size, you can determine which one has the better results.

15 – Promote products from many different merchants.

This is tip is similar to that old finance advice we get: don’t put all your eggs in one basket, you need to diversify your investments.

The same holds true here, you shouldn’t promote just one product. It’s important to have a portfolio of products that you promote. If you only promote one company’s product, you are stuck with their commission rate, their landing pages, and ultimately, all your success is tied to just one company.

If you are creative, there are a lot of different ways you can diversify. For example, I promote online courses in the making money online niche, so, besides promoting different courses, what are other products can I promote?

Usually, people interested in making money online need to build a website, a Youtube channel, or landing pages. So, I can also promote Webhosting, word press themes, and softwares.

16 – Only recommend products you are extremely familiar with.

You should never recommend a product that you don’t know about or that isn’t a good fit for your audience. Just make your focus to providing value to your audience with your expertise and sales will come, trust me.

The reputation and the trust you are building is very valuable asset. If you damage your reputation with bad recommendations, you can never recover.

17 – Grow Affiliate Revenue from Your Email List

There’s no way, email marketing is still the best way to earn passive income.

SEO is great, but you are in Google’s hands. Google can change the algorithm and your rankings can drop down to the bottom.

The same holds for Youtube, you’re also in their hands. You can build a 1 million followers channel, but if you violate Youtube policy, they can delete your account.

Paid ads can bring you quick results, but you need to have the budget and you run the risk to lose money.

But your email list is all yours. No one can take it from you. In addition, your list will be full of people who are interested in your offer.

So, my advice is, no matter what traffic channel you are using, be it blog, Youtube, or paid advertising, it’s for sure worth to build an email list.
